This position works in the Strategic Services division of the University of Medical Center Police Department. The position serves in a support capacity ensuring that all department vehicles are maintained, serviced and repaired. The incumbent must have knowledge or aptitude for understanding basic vehicle maintenance and repair fundamentals. The position works independently and with some discretion. The responsibilities of this position are crucial aspect in the department achieving safety and security service goals.

Required Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Six months to one year experience in basic vehicle service, maintenance and repair

High School Diploma or GED equivalent
Must possess or be willing to obtain a valid unrestricted Driver’s License (corrective lenses acceptable)
Ability to efficiently operate motorized vehicles, two-way radios and other equipment.
Maintain effective working relationships with public, staff and officials. Read and understand written laws, rules and regulations.
Ability to remain calm in stressful situations. Must provide a working contact number.
Must successfully pass a required drug screen pursuant to K.S.A 75-4362 & K.S.A. 75-4363.
Candidates must successfully complete a background investigation.
Must receive an annual influenza (flu) vaccination.

Superior driving history which includes:
No driver’s license suspensions or revocations within the past two years
No DUI convictions or diversion within the past two years
No more than one DUI conviction or diversion ever
NO suspended Driver’s License – 2 year after reinstatement before application.
NO more than 3 moving violations in the past 2 years.
NO more than one DUI conviction or arrest in the past three (3) years.
NO unlawful drug usage (of any kind) for most recent three years.

Ability to learn, understand, and apply Department rules and regulations and standard operating procedures.
Municipal, State, and Federal laws and regulations that apply to the duties of a Safety & Security Officer.
Learn skills necessary to operate equipment used in the performance of duties.
Communicate verbally in a quick and clear manner. Accurately complete forms, maintain records, and produce written documents that are clear and concise. Provide accurate testimony in an investigation or court appearance.
Tolerate stressful situations, including dealing with traumatic situations, emergencies, and other emotionally tense and demanding situations.
Make rational decisions as well as apply policies and procedures in a fast paced environment.
Deal with distractions and interruptions while maintaining concentration and focus.
Recognize risk and to follow standard safety procedures.
Assert oneself and take charge of situations when necessary. Remain calm under stressful and angry situations.

Ability to work with minimal supervision.

Job Duties

Description of Job Duty

80% Vehicle Service, Maintenance and Repair

Incumbent is responsible for ensuring the department’s fleet of vehicles are routinely taken for service, maintenance, repair and recalls.

Inspects vehicles for needed maintenance, repair or service needs; ensures vehicles are fully serviced (e.g. filled with gas and appropriate fluid levels) and prepared for use (e.g. seasonal preparations). Purchases replacement parts and equipment as needed (e.g. tires, batteries,… etc.).

Ensures vehicle service, maintenance and repair requests are processed promptly; follows requests through to completion; and vehicles are back in service as expeditiously as possible.

Maintains open communication between supervisor and division Captains regarding vehicle statuses. Reports concerns or issues to supervisor in a prompt and timely manner. When appropriate, information should be conveyed to the Division Head in a timely manner.

Consults with supervisor and/or other superiors prior to decisions being made regarding large or unusual repair expenditures.

Ensures vehicles are routinely cleaned (including full details as needed).
Checks and ensures proper fluid levels are maintained in all vehicles (e.g. windshield washer fluid, transmission, brake fluid,…etc) at all times.

Maintains a working knowledge of appropriate State of Kansas purchase and service contracts; solicits the use of services via State contract items and/or vendors, when appropriate
Ensures all vehicles contain a working fire extinguisher, AED, Jump Pack and Road Hazard items; responsible for ensuring fire extinguishers are placed, inspected and serviced regularly.

Incumbent is responsible for submitting purchase requests, receipts, invoices,… etc. in a timely manner. Works collaboratively with department personnel to ensure services and payments are reconciled.

Maintains vehicle service, maintenance and repair documentation and record using appropriate computer based programs.

10% Customer Service, Work Relations and Integrity

Employee is to provide prompt courteous service to both personnel and external customers.

Employee should display a well groomed appearance and professional behavior at all times.

As a representative of the department, incumbent should display professional behavior and demeanor at all times.

Incumbent must be able to maintain control of self and situations; not display rude, discourteous, abrupt, argumentative, unhelpful or any like behaviors.

Creates positive, effective and harmonious working relationships.

5% Annual Vehicle Licensing, Insuring and Registration

Incumbent is responsible for new vehicle registration and licensing. Works with Administrative staff to ensure all vehicle related matters are prepared (e.g. gas cards). Employee ensures documentation is provided to the appropriate department and University areas.

Employee ensures that vehicles are properly licensed, registered, titled, insured and registered for Kansas K-Tag at all times.

5% Additional Duties

Responsible for commissioned and civilian uniform dry cleaning services management.

Maintains control of all department equipment and uniforms issued
Attends regular and mandatory training
Other duties as assigned
