Position Summary

Project Eagle is an early childhood program focused on preparing children, engaging families, and promoting excellence for children and families in Kansas City, Kansas. Project Eagle provides home-based and center-based services to pregnant women and/or children ages birth to five through a variety of programs, the largest being Early Head Start. Project Eagle is also a member of the Educare Learning Network, part of a national initiative that serves as a platform for broader change, inspiring high-quality programs in communities, improving public policies within each state, and demonstrating a comprehensive approach to the first five years of life and learning. The Associate Preschool Teacher is responsible for the implementation and coordination of a comprehensive education program, ensuring that the education program is developmentally appropriate for each child’s individual needs and meets program standards. The Associate Teacher works with the Lead Teacher to ensure that the classroom activities and environment are developmentally appropriate and reflect the agency’s philosophy and curriculum. The Associate Teacher works with the classroom teaching team to implement individual education plans for children ages 3 through 5 years, which encourage their social, emotional, physical, linguistic, and intellectual development in a manner appropriate to their age and stage of development. The Associate Teacher provides a safe, stimulating, and nurturing environment enriched by a high quality early language experience and an emphasis on social and emotional growth. The Associate Teacher is responsible for implementing all program requirements in adherence to performance and outcome standards as prescribed by funding and model requirements. This position ensures that the individual needs of the children are met as mandated by federal, state and local standards.

Required Qualifications

• Associate’s degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or closely related field
• Ability to establish trusting relationships with young children.
• Ability to work as a cooperative and supportive team member.
• Ability to communicate and respond in a manner that consistently demonstrates respect and concern.
• Ability to communicate effectively and establish partnerships with other classroom teachers, center staff, community partners, and parents.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
• Basic computer skills.
• Ability to individualize care based on individual children’s needs (medical, educational, family situations).
• Ability to become CPR and First Aid Certified within 30 days of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working in an Early Head Start Center-based program.
• Bilingual Spanish/English.
• Knowledge of Head Start Performance Standards.
• Successful experience working as a part of a multidisciplinary team to provide high quality, developmentally-appropriate care and education for young children.
• Experience working with inclusion, early intervention, children with special needs and diverse populations. Experience implementing curriculum. Experience using assessment tools to measure children’s development. Experience using assessment data for instructional purposes. Experience with research partnerships.

Curriculum and Instruction
• Lead, plan and implement developmentally appropriate classroom activities that intentionally support the developmental and educational goals of children’s individual education plans
• Work with the evaluation team to integrate assessment results into curriculum and lesson planning
• Plan and implement learning experiences that promote all developmental domains (social, emotional, physical and cognitive) including contributing to the readiness of children to enter school by developing their early language acquisition and vocabulary.
• Intentionally integrate other activities i.e., health/physical activity, nutrition, mental health, disabilities, safety and parental involvement into the educational plan

Description of Job Duty

Child Development
• Assess student needs and develop an individualized educational plan for each child
• Observe, assess and document each child’s skills, behavior, growth and development
• Bring to attention those children with special needs and work closely with other staff in assessing and developing individualized education plans and family service plans and providing services to support the development of children with special needs
• Assist children and families with educational transitions, into and out of classrooms
• Encourage children to develop acceptable standards of behavior, including positive social relationships
• Provide opportunities for children to develop positive self-images and experience success
• Collaborate with the Family Support Coordinator and other personnel to promote individual children’s goals
• In conjunction with the Master Teacher, lead Child and Family Reviews
• Contribute child information to Mental Health consultations and/or Individualized Educational Plans/Individualized Family Service Plans
• Foster positive relationships with all children in the classroom

Parent Involvement
• Plan parent nights for the classroom that incorporate parent education and parent/child activities
• Interact with parents regularly through daily classroom contact and contribute to and participate in interdisciplinary child and family reviews, parent conferences and home visits to share child educational and developmental and school readiness progress and respond to their identified interests and/or needs
• Collaborate with family support staff to clarify and meet child and family needs
• Actively encourage parent engagement in program activities and implementing education activities for their children at home and in the community
• Mentor families in developing skills to act as advocates for their children in the education system

Classroom Management
• Create an effective environment for learning that supports children’s development of school readiness skills, independence, and social and emotional development, Educare Core Features and Head Start Performance Standards
• Ensure that children are under appropriate supervision at all times
• Maintain a clean, healthy and safe classroom environment
• Participates in the selection of instructional supplies and maintain inventory and inventory records
• Conduct authorized emergency and safety procedures
• Support the mission of Project Eagle/Educare of Kansas City by hosting classroom visitors

Description of Job Duty

• Participate in the local evaluation and national Educare Implementation Study, engaging in a system of reciprocal, regular data feedback and utilization for individualized planning for children and families and continuous program improvement.
• Participate in ongoing professional development, coaching and reflective supervision activities and support the implementation of changes in classroom practice to promote high quality instruction
• Participate in ongoing professional development as required by the Educare Learning Network and/or Project Eagle.
• Follow all mandates of Head Start Regulations, state and local child care licensing, and Project Eagle/Educare of Kansas City’s philosophy and curriculum
• Performs other related duties as assigned
