Position Summary

This will be a full-time position with an appointment to the Faculty of the School of Health Professions.

The KU Department of Health Information Management is located on the campus of a world-class academic health center, The University of Kansas Health System, as well as the nationally recognized Cancer Center with National Cancer Institute designation.

The incumbent will be the Department Chair of Health Information Management responsible for providing strong and progressive leadership of a well-established department of nationally recognized faculty. The faculty maintain a high level of participation in interprofessional team-based education, practice, and research. The location at an academic health center provides opportunities for collaboration with the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Health Professions. Historically, all of our Health Information Management graduates are successful in obtaining appropriate positions and/or advanced degree placements within 6 months of graduation, although most students have placement by completion of their degree program.

The successful candidate will be responsible for activities that contribute to the department’s mission and success, ensuring alignment with the university’s mission and strategic plan as it pertains to teaching, research, scholarly contributions and service. In addition to maintaining ongoing accreditation, the department chair will be responsible for day-to-day management of personnel/faculty, budgets, faculty mentoring, program development and departmental growth.

Academic rank, salary, and tenure or non-tenure track status are dependent on the education and experience of the successful candidate.

Position reports to the Dean of School of Health Professions.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Administration with a RHIA credential (Required) and a Masters of business, public administration, education or HIM related field, or comparable education and/or experience. At least 2 years of relevant experience in teaching, curriculum development and evaluation required.

Must have excellent oral and written communication skills; a demonstrated ability to initiate and exercise independent judgment and decisionmaking; and work comfortably with a diverse faculty, workforce, student body, and community partners. Must have demonstrated expertise using Microsoft Office Suite and related computer software for database analysis. Must be able to work concurrently on multiple projects and maintain accurate documentation. Excellent customer service skills and professional demeanor and etiquette are also required.

Preferred Qualifications

A doctoral degree in health management fields, information management or informatics, education or other degree which will be evaluated as they might relate to the needs of the program. Experience teaching in an HIM program and/or at an academic medical center.

Develop, revise and teach curriculum related to health information administration/management courses. Updating the curriculum and courses when the professional organization, accrediting body and governmental agencies publish new trends and requirements.

Facilitate learning according to educational preparation, expertise, programmatic needs, professional organizations, accrediting and governmental agencies. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to: coaching and mentoring students, classroom preparations, individual course preparations, maintaining professional knowledge base, and updating course materials taught for online and resident courses.

Ensure that the curriculum meets standards for accreditation and the demands/changes of the profession including multi-cultural dimensions within the curriculum; foster advanced and innovative teaching methods.

Provide presentations to professional organizations; participate in continuing education and review sessions; publish paper in peer and non-peer review publications; commit to supporting departmental research and consulting effort and when feasible identify external consulting opportunities for faculty.

Provide service responsibilities as assigned, School of Health Professions (SHP) committees (standing and ad hoc) and promote the SHP mission and vision; University committees (standing and ad hoc); promote the KUMC mission and vision; and professional local/state/ and national committees and/or elected positions.

Evaluate faculty and staff performance; prepare budget requests and effectively use allocated funds for the benefit of the department and its educational programs; prepare and submit reports as necessary to meet administrative and accreditation demands; create and maintain an environment of diversity in the department and in the school; recruit and select departmental faculty and staff; maintain ongoing accreditation.
