The Associate Teacher is responsible for assisting the Lead Teacher in coordinating the daily operation of an assigned Early Head Start/Educare of Kansas City infant/toddler classroom to meet all Educare Core Features, Head Start Performance standards and federal and state guidelines.

Required Qualifications
  • Associates degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or closely related field.
  • Experience working with Infants and toddlers.
  • Ability to establish trusting relationships with young children.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and establish partnerships with other classroom teachers, center staff, community partners, and parents.
  • Willingness to work in a highly collaborative environment.
  • Desire for continued professional growth.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to individualize care based on individual children’s needs (medical, educational, family situations).
  • Ability to become CPR and First Aid Certified within 30 days of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or closely related field.
  • Knowledge or experience in Early Head Start classrooms and/or knowledge of Head Start Performance Standards.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English.
  • Successful experience working as a part of a multidisciplinary team to provide high quality, developmentally-appropriate care and education for young children. * Experience working with underserved and diverse populations.
  • Experience implementing curriculum.
  • Experience using assessment tools to measure children’s development.
  • Experience using assessment data for instructional purposes.
  • Basic computer skills.

Ensure that all children are under appropriate supervision and guidance at all times. Act as the primary caregiver for assigned children. Implement center based programming in accordance with mission/philosophy of the program.

Provide a supportive social-emotional classroom climate. Greet parents or guardian cordially, respectfully, and professionally and exchange accurate information concerning the child’s needs and daily experiences. Establish rapport with families. Assist Lead Teacher in providing daily written communication to parents regarding their child’s involvement in classroom activities and progress toward learning goals. Make home visits with the Family Support Advocate for Parent-Teacher conferences or as requested.

Follow all established organizational and classroom specific policies and procedures. Adhere to all Head Start Performance Standards, Kansas Child Care Licensing Regulations and Educare Learning Network core features. Predict unsafe situations and take precautions; diaper children and participate in potty training and toileting; provide child first aid; implement procedures that prevent the spread of infectious diseases; promote oral and physical health; and appropriately respond to emergencies/crises. Assist Lead Teacher in maintaining a safe and healthy environment through regular cleaning of the classroom, performing regular health and safety checks, and report broken or defective toys and/or equipment to the Master Teacher.

Assist the Lead Teacher in the development of lesson plans that include goals, objectives, activities, and outcomes for children. Use assessment data to individualize lesson plans to best meet each child’s developmental goals. Implement developmentally appropriate lesson plans that enhance the social-emotional, physical, language and cognitive development of each child. Integrate other areas (i.e. health, nutrition, mental health, disabilities, parent involvement) into the lesson plans. Completes developmental screenings/assessments on all assigned children and submits them to the Lead Teacher for review. Collects all documentation, including assessments, developmental goals and observations, for assigned children’s portfolios and compiles portfolio in collaboration with the Lead Teacher.

Meet with the Master Teacher on a regular basis for reflective supervision. In partnership with the Master Teacher, develop an action plan for professional development that is based on classroom assessments, center goals, and self-assessments. Actively engage in team-based planning and shared decision-making. Notify supervisor immediately of any unusual or at risk situations.

Assumes responsibility for assigned classroom in absence of the Lead Teacher.

Assist in maintaining accurate attendance records, CACFP records, and documentation required for reporting. Assist in food preparation, serving and clean up.

Actively participate in all classroom assessments as part of the Educare Learning Network cross-site evaluation. Work in partnership with Lead Teacher to implement action plans based on assessment and evaluation results.

Participate in professional meetings, training sessions, staff meetings, and parent meetings as requested. Work collaboratively in the classroom with community partners, volunteers, and evaluation staff. Must be available to work occasional evenings to conduct home-visits and parent teacher conferences with family support staff. Assist with orientation and enrollment process as needed.
