The Infant/Toddler Teacher is responsible for the implementation and coordination of a comprehensive education program, ensuring that the education program is developmentally appropriate for each child’s individual needs and meets program standards. The Teacher works with the Teacher Leader to ensure that the classroom activities and environment are developmentally appropriate and reflect the agency’s philosophy and curriculum. The Teacher works with the classroom teaching team to implement individual education plans for children ages 6 weeks through 3 years, which encourage their social, emotional, physical, linguistic, and intellectual development in a manner appropriate to their age and stage of development. The Teacher provides a safe, stimulating, and nurturing environment enriched by a high quality early language experience and an emphasis on social and emotional growth. The Teacher is responsible for implementing all program requirements in adherence to performance and outcome standards as prescribed by funding and model requirements. This position ensures that the individual needs of the children are met as mandated by federal, state and local standards.

Required Qualifications
  • Associate degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or closely related field
  • Ability to establish trusting relationships with young children
  • Ability to work as a cooperative and supportive team member
  • Ability to communicate and respond in a manner that consistently demonstrates respect and concern
  • Ability to communicate effectively and establish partnerships with other classroom teachers, center staff, community partners, and parents
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability to individualize care based on individual children’s needs (medical, educational, family situations)
  • Ability to become CPR and First Aid Certified within 30 days of employment
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in an Early Head Start Center-based program
  • Bilingual Spanish/English
  • Knowledge of Head Start Performance Standards
  • Successful experience working as a part of a multidisciplinary team to provide high quality, developmentally-appropriate care and education for young children
  • Experience working with inclusion, early intervention, children with special needs and diverse populations
  • Experience implementing curriculum
  • Experience using assessment tools to measure children’s development
  • Experience using assessment data for instructional purposes

Description of Job Duty

Lead, plan and implement developmentally appropriate classroom activities that intentionally support the developmental and educational goals of children’s individual education plans. Plan and implement learning experiences that promote all developmental domains (social, emotional, physical and cognitive) including contributing to the readiness of children to enter school by developing their early language acquisition and vocabulary. Intentionally integrate other activities i.e., health/physical activity, nutrition, mental health, disabilities, safety and parental involvement into the educational plan.

Assess student needs and develop an individualized educational plan for each child. Observe, assess and document each child’s skills, behavior, growth and development. Bring to attention those children with special needs and work closely with the Teacher Leader in assessing and developing individualized education plans and family service plans and providing services to support the development of children with special needs. Assist children and families with educational transitions, into and out of classrooms. Encourage children to develop acceptable standards of behavior, including positive social relationships. Provide opportunities for children to develop positive self-images and experience success. Collaborate with the Teacher Leader to promote individual children’s goals. Prepare information for and participate in Child and Family Reviews. Contribute child information to Mental Health consultations and/or Individualized Educational Plans/Individualized Family Service Plans. Foster positive relationships with all children in the classroom.

Description of Job Duty

Interact with parents regularly through daily classroom contact and contribute to and participate in interdisciplinary child and family reviews, parent conferences and home visits to share child educational and developmental and school readiness progress and respond to their identified interests and/or needs. Collaborate with the Teacher Leader to clarify and meet child and family needs. Actively encourage parent engagement in classroom activities and implementing education activities for their children at home and in the community.

Description of Job Duty

Assist Teacher Aides in preparing educational materials and setting up classroom for daily activities, supporting classroom staff, children and parents. Supervise children under his/her care at all times to insure their safety. Rotate to partnering classroom as needed or required. Follow all established organizational and classroom specific policies and procedures. Predict unsafe situations and take precautions; provide child first aid; diaper children and participate in potty training and toileting; implement procedures that prevent the spread of infectious diseases; promote oral and physical health; and appropriately respond to emergencies/crises. Assist in food preparation, serving and clean up. Adhere to all Head Start Performance Standards and Kansas Child Care Licensing Regulations.

Ensure that all children are under appropriate supervision and guidance at all times. Provide a supportive social-emotional classroom climate. Complete daily activity and accident reports. Establish rapport with families. Assist Teacher Aides in providing daily written communication to parents regarding their child’s involvement in classroom activities and progress toward learning goals. Support the mission of Project Eagle by hosting classroom visitors.

Description of Job Duty

Participate in ongoing professional development, coaching and reflective supervision activities and support the implementation of changes in classroom practice to promote high quality instruction. Participate in ongoing professional development as required by Project Eagle or community partners. Follow all mandates of Head Start Regulations, state and local child care licensing, and Project Eagle mission, philosophy and curriculum. Work collaboratively in the classroom with community partners and volunteers
