Position Summary

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Chair provides overall leadership to the department and is accountable to fulfill the education, clinical, and research objectives of the school. This position has responsibility to ensure that the educational standards are maintained for the accreditation of both undergraduate and graduate programs. The chair shall develop and provide direction to faculty to help them achieve success at the professional level. The chair is responsible for the quality of patient care and building the research success of the department.

Required Qualifications

Degree: Doctor of Medicine (MD or DO) or Ph.D./PsyD in Clinical Counseling or Clinical Neuropsychology

Certification: Certified in Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology or certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology

License: State of Kansas medical license (or eligible for licensure) or Kansas Behavioral Science regulatory board psychology license or eligible for licensure

Ability to qualify as member of hospital medical staff and University practice plan

Experience in clinical patient care, both inpatient and outpatient settings

Demonstrable experience in strategic planning, implementation, organization, leadership and management in clinical settings

Effective communicator and leader in all levels of educational and administrative responsibility

Demonstrable success developing and working within teams of diverse stakeholders, including excellent verbal and non-verbal communication skills, professionalism, respect for diversity, conflict management skills and evaluation/feedback skills

Demonstrable experience in engaging diverse people and organizations in his/her community, including coordinating and implementing extramural partnerships for program development

Experience with budget management

Preferred Qualifications

Associate Professor or above in present position with at least five years of experience at an accredited medical school in the United States

Experience with major responsibilities in undergraduate medical education, either as a part of psychiatry clerkship activities or sub-specialty rotations, and including direct teaching as well as development of curricula and/or evaluation tools

Experience with major responsibilities in graduate medical education, either in a general Psychiatry residency program or in a fellowship, and including direct teaching as well as accountability for curricula and/or evaluation

History of successful supervision and education of both undergraduate and graduate students in patient care

Experience in diverse clinical care models and finance systems, including public care systems, private hospital settings, profit and non-profit models. Preference will be given for experience in Veteran’s Administration and community hospital settings

Published scholarly work including manuscripts of research and/or process improvement in peer-reviewed journals or major contributions to text books or related publications in the field of education or patient care. Experience in investigative activities is preferred but does not need to be in basic laboratory activities and may be related to investigational work and/or process improvement solely within the clinical setting.

Preference will be given to those who have been successful in obtaining extramural funding for clinical investigation

Demonstrable ability to facilitate scholarship in peers and/or faculty

Experience developing and utilizing volunteer faculty

Experience, directly or indirectly, with successful community fundraising for program and faculty development

Experience in dealing with the media as well as major medical service organizations

Proven capabilities in human resource management and related decision making

Job Duties

Description of Job Duty

Develop, facilitate and implement vision and strategy for the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences in all domains, including clinical services, teaching, scholarship, faculty development, and community relationships. This includes academic programs for medical students, residents and psychology trainees

Ensure that department systems provide cohesive support to the medical school’s mission and that the department operates effectively within ethical, financial, prudent business practice and legal parameters

Create and execute strategic initiatives designed to enhance the education of medical students, residents and psychology trainees in conjunction with clerkship and program directors. Ultimately accountable for graduate and undergraduate medical education in all pertinent settings, including ongoing maintenance of accreditation of the Psychiatry Residency Program and Psychology Education Program

Select and retain excellent faculty and administrative staff for the department and responsible to ensure their mentoring and continued development

Accountable for the fiscal health and budgets of the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences in accordance with State and University regulations

Develop and maintain effective relationships with other medical school personnel and internal and external partners that result in the accomplishment of respective missions

Promote collaboration between departments of the medical school

Accountable for appropriate medical school, practice plan, department and community educational activities and committee participation and facilitates the active involvement of the department faculty in such activities

Description of Job Duty

Responsible for creating an environment conducive for scholarship, including integrating department and school research resources and promotion of individual faculty scholarly development and production which, at a minimum, meets requirements for ACGME/RRC scholarship of core faculty

Work in conjunction with Public Affairs and the University of Kansas Endowment Association to promote the department positively and facilitate fundraising for department and school programs

Report directly to the Dean and accept any and all other duties assigned by the Dean
