Position Summary

Under supervision, performs routine husbandry, janitorial, cage wash and biotechnical procedures related to the care and use of laboratory animals. Maintains records and assists with the needs of LAR staff and researchers.

Required Qualifications

Ability to lift 50 lbs. Ability to wear personal protective equipment, including a respirator. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions. Basic computer skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Six months experience working with animals. Some college. ALAT certification.

Job Duties

Description of Job Duty

60% – Cleans and maintains cages, animal rooms, support areas and related equipment according to standard operating procedures. Feeds and waters animals. Receives and houses animals. Breeds and weans animals. Monitors environmental parameters. Records information on the cage cards and check sheets. Follows disinfection schedules. Disinfects animal rooms and support areas. Prepares, distributes, and uses disinfectants.

Description of Job Duty

20% – Cleans and repairs caging equipment and related ancillary equipment. Follows supervisor directions for complying with established federal, state and local regulations relating to laboratory animals and facilities. Follows established health and safety procedures. Follows facility security procedures. Performs cage and rack washing. Cleans and maintains washers and autoclaves. Removes hazardous waste products.

Description of Job Duty

10% – Conducts animal health observations. Quarantines and isolates animals as needed following appropriate protocols. Identifies animals using appropriate methods. Handles and restrains animals. Collects various biological samples. Administers drugs/test compounds via various routes. Prepares and dispenses experimental compounds, chemicals, drugs, etc, following standard protocols. Pre-weighs and measures liquids and drugs, and loads dispensing apparatus. Issues animal/cage status notifications to researchers. Euthanizes animals and disposes of carcasses as required.

10% – Performs related duties as assigned. Cleans and maintains rack and recoil hose stations Operates mechanical cleaning equipment. Maintains supply inventory and requests replacements as necessary. Organizes and cleans storage areas. Assist with receiving goods and distribution of goods.
