Position Summary

The University of Kansas, Department of plastic surgery has a one-year microvascular reconstructive surgery Fellowship position open for the 2018-2019 academic year starting July 1, 2018. The position provides an in-depth experience with microsurgical techniques focusing on perforator flap breast reconstruction but also including head and neck, upper extremity and lower extremity reconstruction. More than 150 free flaps were performed last year and our volume is continuing to increase. There will also be an opportunity to participate in a cosmetic surgery clinic and gain experience in the full range of cosmetic surgery procedures. The fellow will be expected to participate in resident teaching conferences as well as research projects. Completion of an accredited plastic surgery program and board eligibility is a requirement.

Required Qualifications

Admission to the fellowship is contingent upon completion of one of the ACGME-approved residencies in otolaryngology, plastic surgery or general surgery and eligibility to sit for board examination in applicant’s respective specialty. All applicants must be eligible for a medical license in the state of Kansas.

Job Duties

Description of Job Duty

The Fellow is expected to be involved as a primary or assisting surgeon in all microvascular reconstructive cases as well as transoral robotic resections and skull base cases. The fellow will follow the pre-operative as well as post-operative course of at least 200 head and neck cancer patients.

The Fellow will also have didactic teaching responsibilities including resident/medical student lectures and at least one major Grand Rounds presentation. He/she will be expected to act as a teaching physician to a resident during the more straightforward part of a complex head and neck resection, or routine cases such as uncomplicated neck dissections, thyroidectomies, glossectomies or parotidectomies.

The Microsurgery Fellow will attend the “Introduction to Clinical Research” course at the School of Medicine. The Fellow is expected to complete a research project to be presented at a national meeting as well as submitted for publication.
