Position Summary

The Director will lead the Division’s clinical, research and educational activities. This position will provide leadership, direction, supervision, and accountability to the Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology in fulfilling the research, educational and clinical mission and values of the University of Kansas Medical Center. S/he is responsible for providing the vision, strategic direction, and environment to grow and sustain the expansion of the Division. This position will interact productively and collaboratively with all aspects at all levels of the Division, Department and various institutes at KUMC, and throughout KUMC as a whole. Building relationships, mentoring faculty, and recruitment and retention are key elements of this position.

Required Qualifications

M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. with an excellent record of NIH funding, outstanding track records of publications, clinical research, productivity and mentorship. Board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology; eligible for Kansas/Missouri medical license.

Preferred Qualifications

National and international leader in their area of clinical and research expertise; Excellent and effective interpersonal skills to develop relationships for strong collaborations; Strong track record of leadership in academic medical center or similar environment; Proven ability to develop and execute short and long term strategic initiatives.

Development of an outcomes and translational research program as well as improvements in the scholarship activities by trainees. Future expansion of both the clinical mission and the fellowship program complement the needed growth in research with the vision to achieve national and international recognition for research efforts.

Develop an organization structure for the division that functions collaboratively, professionally, and competently with internal and external entities. Provide administrative direction and use sound management techniques with regard to program development. Develop goals and implement strategies with guidance from the Department Chair and fiscal input from the Business Manager. Develop measures to evaluate outcomes of divisional activities. Pursue appropriate resources and funding sources for program development. Evaluate the division’s progress and effectively respond to environmental changes. Strive for excellence and integrity with a balance between idealism and pragmatism.

Expand the Division’s clinical and research activities in collaboration with KUMC by the recruitment of physician and basic scientists.

Provide guidance and resources for the development and continual improvement of excellent educational opportunities for medical and graduate students, health professionals, staff, faculty, community physicians and the public at large. Remain abreast of accreditation, certification, and regulatory standards governing educational programs. Ensure objective evaluation of educational programs, learners, and educators.

Coach, counsel, lead, mentor and motivate faculty and staff at all levels within the division. Recruit able faculty, support them in achieving their career potential and maximize their contribution to the University. Establish expectations and standards. Evaluate performance and recommend appropriate rewards for excellence or actions needed to improve performance. Identify and take appropriate action for unacceptable behavior by students, residents, fellows and faculty.

Serve on committees, boards, councils and ad hoc groups to advance the goals of the institution, to represent the department and division, and to contribute to KU’s commitment to the well-being of the greater community.

Maintain a maternal fetal medicine practice. Write referral letters and documentation for patient medical records as appropriate. These patient-care duties may involve the attending physicians only, or they may involve training medical students, residents or fellows.
