Position Summary

Responsible for conducting research and coordination of the laboratory. The basic focus of this lab will be on investigating the mechanisms of altered gene expression in colorectal cancer. The study will integrate cellular and animal models with molecular and biochemical approaches to selectively target post-transcriptional gene regulation.

Required Qualifications

Masters degree in biological sciences or related field. Experience can substitute for education on a year-by-year basis. Minimum 1-2 year lab experience working with basic research, demonstrated lab tech skills. Basic understanding of mammalian cell and molecular biology.

Preferred Qualifications

Candidate with previous research experience in mouse handling and colony maintenance, cell-culture techniques, RNA/protein analysis (PCR, western blot, immuno-histochemistry), will be preferred. Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Description of Job Duty

Conduct research in cancer biology and post-transcriptional gene regulation using cell biological, biochemical, and/or molecular techniques to determine mechanisms of action of RNA-binding proteins and microRNAs.

Perform studies utilizing transfection, gene/protein expression through qPCR, microarrays, immunoblots and gel electrophoresis, cell culture, animal models, flow cytometry, ChIP, and/or mRNP-IP. Maintain mouse colonies and perform genotyping breeding along with in vivo mouse studies.

Attend all orientation and training sessions designated by the University and Department, attend departmental seminars and attend regular lab meetings. Provide laboratory training for new students and fellows in the lab.

Will be expected to particiate in various research projects under the guidance of the faculty supervisor, record and interpret the results of their experiments in a laboratory notebook, prepare publication-quality manuscripts (including figures and tables) and particiate in publish in peer-reviewed literature. The applicant will also read literature articles and assimilate the information into his/her project design/interpretation.

Description of Job Duty

Interact on a regular basis with their faculty mentor and members of the laboratory to discuss experimental design and interpretation of results, and publish their results in abstracts, manuscripts, posters. Develop and maintain lab guidelines for specific studies as directed by lab supervisor. Develop new protocols and trouble-shoot existing assays as needed. Troubleshoot technical problems as they arise, including appropriate documentation.

Order supplies and negotiate prices on lab consumables. Follow established quality control and quality assurance policies and procedures, including appropriate documentation.

Serve as appropiate lab safety person as needed. Disposes of biohazardous materials, chemical waste, sharps and other potentially hazardous materials according to policy, and strictly adheres to safety and biosafety control procedures.

Calibrates, maintains and operates equipment keeping appropriate documentation. Reports malfunctions to supervisor. Maintains adequate inventory of lab kits and reagents.

Coordinates daily activities and works closely with lab supervisor. Attends and presents research at lab meetings.
