Position Summary

The family medicine residency faculty/ sports medicine fellowship faculty is dually responsible for supporting the education of the family medicine residents and sports medicine fellowship program in the family medicine center, hospitals and community; assisting in selecting, supervising and evaluating residents, fellows and faculty; developing and implementing curriculum; working with the program directors so that educational goals and objectives are met; and assuring that requirements of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) are met. Additional responsibilities are to support medical student education, patient care, service and research/scholarly activities.

Required Qualifications

M.D. or D.O. degree
American Board of Family Medicine certified in family medicine or board eligible
American Board of Family Medicine Certification of Added Qualifications (CAQ) in Sports Medicine or CAQ eligible
Unrestricted Kansas license to practice medicine
DEA number
Appropriate Via Christi Hospitals medical staff appointment and hospital privileges
Qualified for appointment at Instructor or Assistant Professor level
Meets ACGME faculty requirements for sports medicine fellowship program
Proven leadership capability

Preferred Qualifications

2 years experience in family medicine education
Previous administrative role in a family medicine residency program and/or sports medicine fellowship program
Proven participation contributing to a sports medicine fellowship program
Demonstrated ability to develop educational curriculum
Participation in successful recruitment process
Demonstrated ability to conduct scholarly activity and research with faculty, residents and fellows
Practice experience
Completion of academic fellowship or National Institute of Program Directors Development
Participation in American Medical Society for Sports Medicine activities
Provide ambulatory, inpatient care and obstetric care

Job Duties

Description of Job Duty

Sports Medicine Fellowship Education – 50%
Facilitates the smooth functioning and integration of office, hospital, on-field and training room care of patients
Assists with coordination of all levels of sports medicine fellowship education at the sports medicine clinic, hospitals and the community
Provides didactic teaching for sports medicine fellows
Assists in selection and supervision of the fellows
Assists in development of educational goals and objectives of program
Assists in fellow evaluation and well-being
Assists the program director to assure that the requirements established by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and the Family Medicine Review Committee are met by the program
Works with local professional, college and high school sports teams to insure appropriate care of patients and learning opportunities for fellows
Assists fellows and faculty to meet or exceed the scholarly activity requirements for accreditation
Develops own scholarly activity portfolio including national and regional presentations and publications
Assists in resident rotations in sports medicine
Works with the Chair and Sports Medicine Program Director to oversee the KUSM-W medical student elective rotation in sports medicine
Works to achieve the mission of the Department of Family & Community Medicine and the university

Faculty Physician for the Family Medicine Residency Program – 50%
Develops continuity of care practice
Supervises resident education in office, in hospital and in the community
Evaluates performance of residents and medical students
Participates in didactic teaching of residents and medical students
Serves as a mentor for family medicine residents
Assists in resident recruitment process
Assists in residency research and scholarly activities
Contributes to ACGME accreditation requirements
Attends family medicine faculty and resident meetings, conferences, and retreats
Participates in faculty development activities
